About 450 fighters attacked the 3rd Bomb Division formations and forty-five aircraft were shot down. The raid on Magdeburg alone cost the 493rd Bomb Group twelve Fortresses. In mid-September the B-17s flew a mercy drop to the beleaguered Polish Home Army in the ruins of Warsaw. The Polish capital was totally cut off from the outside world, with the German army on one side and the Soviets on the other. Stalin had asked Polish General Bor to rise against the German occupiers, but had then stood by while the gallant Poles were gradually annihilated.
Huls produced approximately 29 per cent of Germany’s synthetic rubber and 18 per cent of its total rubber supply. It was also the most heavily defended target in the Reich at the time. Most of the route was flown without escort and the mission relied heavily on diversionary feints over the North Sea. Plans went awry when a formation of twenty-one B-17s in the 100th Bomb Group, which should have made its theatre debut, was prevented from taking off because of ground mist and other problems. The 182 B-17s that made it to the target came under repeated attack and sixteen Fortresses were shot down.
Even so, 168 Fortresses got their bombs away on target, while thirty others hit the secondary target at Cuxhaven. About twenty fighters attacked the low groups in the 4th Bomb Wing, which lost one B-17, while sixty-two Fortresses returned with damage and eighty-five fighters were claimed shot down. However, only seven Luftwaffe fighters were destroyed or damaged and two pilots were injured. The bomber numbers were still too small but in June the 100th Bomb Group arrived, going first to Podington, then to Thorpe Abbotts, in Suffolk.
