With US help, a group of insurgents began an uprising, while air raids undertaken by CIA pilots induced the army to depose him. It took place on 12 May 1927, with 200 police officers searching the company's premises in London, on suspicion that the company was a front for Communist subversion, and that it was holding a British army signals manual.

Officially established by Malan in 1948, it had emerged from policies of segregation which had been progressively introduced in the different parts of the country before the creation of South Africa, and were continued by the unified state from 1910, with the support of every Prime Minister and every White political party. Its official justification was that each race (White, mixed-race (Coloured), Indian, and Black (Bantu)) would prosper most if it developed separately. Harmony would be possible through the races living peacefully side-by-side, while tension would result from them being mixed together in the same environment, competing for the same resources.

These were aggravated by Indian administrative reorganizations aimed at destroying Assam as a single entity and by the influx of around two million Muslims from neighbouring East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) in the Pakistan Civil War (1970).
